Getting Started

Scouting is for families.  Your son is part of a den and a larger family, a “Pack,” so please bring your family to our family meeting once a month, usually  the third Friday of every month.  Each pack night has theme activities, events update and advancements awarded to our scouts.

Getting Started With Scouting:

  • What do I do first?  Complete a registration form and turn in to Committee Chair with registration fee** and Medical History Form Part A&B.  Determine which rank he is.  This is by grade:  First -Tiger, Second-Wolf, Third-Bear, Fourth-first year Webelos, Fifth-second year Webelos.  You’ll be asked if you want to be a den leader.  A den must have a leader before it can start meeting.
  • What do I need to get?  For each year, you will need to purchase the hat, scarf, slide and handbook for that year’s rank.  (Webelos handbook is for both years).  You will also need to get uniform shirt, belt, pants-navy for the navy shirt, olive for khaki shirt.  This is known as uniform A.  You can also purchase a pack t-shirt for uniform B events.
  • We have an uniform swap box.  If you need something, please check the box.  If you want to donate something that you no longer use or your son has outgrown, please bring to pack nights.
  • Where do I get it?  You can purchase these items at the Scout Stores in Massepequa and Medford or online at ScoutStuff.org.  Pack t-shirts (uniform B) are sold at pack nights.
  • For what should go on the uniform and prepare for inspection, here’s a uniform guide sheet.
  • What does my scout do first?  He must earn the Bobcat Badge first before he can earn the rank badge for this year.
  • What is the time commitment?  You will be contacted by your scout’s den leader regarding meetings and dues.  Dens usually meet every week to 2x month for 1 hour.  Pack nights are family friendly and meet once a month on a Friday evening for 1 1/2 hours at the school.

Committee meetings are the first Sunday of every month at 8pm unless otherwise noted.  All leaders and parents are welcome.  One representative from each Den is required to attend.

District Roundtable meetings are held at Longwood JHS or Baiting Hollow the second Thursday of every month.  This is a great way to tap into other Packs and pick their brains!

November Pack Night is traditionally our uniform inspection.  Please review the uniform inspection sheet and make sure your scout has everything in the right place.

January is our famous Pinewood Derby.  Boys get to race their cars and show off their craftsmanship.  Please note there will not be any advancements this month.

February is a celebration of the anniversary of scouting.  We honor scouting and our scouts accomplishments at our annual Blue & Gold banquet, usually a Sunday in early February. There is no pack night in February.

March is usually the time for Bridging – when our fifth graders say goodbye to Pack 340 and hello to their new Boy Scout Troop.

April & May brings new recruitment.

June pack night is usually a picnic outside.
